Périgord Noir is the most renowned part of the Dordogne, located in the south-east of the department. Named after its dark oak forests, the region combines medieval towns, dramatic castles and prehistoric cave sites within scenic river valleys.
The Dordogne and Vézère valleys form the core of the area. Towns such as Sarlat-la-Canéda and Beynac-et-Cazenac are among the most picturesque in France. Hilltop castles overlook the rivers, reflecting the region’s rich history.
