A fantastic base for culture and nature lovers — that’s Camping Les Nobis d’Anjou. It’s set at the foot of Château de Montreuil-Bellay and on the banks of the River Thouet. The owners of this welcoming Paradis campsite will be pleased to greet you at their charming 4-star site in the heart of the Loire Valley, just 15 km from Saumur. Guests with tents, caravans and motorhomes are all welcome. Some of the pitches are separated by green hedges and tall trees, offering plenty of shelter and privacy. No accommodation of your own? You can book a Coco Sweet tent for four people.
Fishing and swimming
Cast a line in the river right next to the campsite, or take a dip in the refreshing water of the (heated) outdoor pool. In poorer weather, the outdoor pool can be closed. Prefer to be on the water rather than in it? Hire a canoe or kayak and explore the area that way. The campsite can provide information about activities in the region. And after a day outdoors, you can enjoy a good meal at the campsite’s friendly restaurant. The chef prepares lovely regional dishes — at an excellent price.
Château de Montreuil-Bellay
From the campsite you look out towards Château de Montreuil-Bellay, the castle right in the village centre. Plan a day to visit the old centre and the château. You can take a guided tour through the building and the large château gardens. There’s even a vineyard in the gardens where wine grapes have been grown for ten centuries. In the château shop you can taste and buy different wines. Also worth adding to your holiday list: the Cadre Noir of Saumur (France’s oldest still-existing equestrian school), the Musée de la Cavalerie (cavalry museum) and the Musée des Blindés (the world’s largest museum of armoured vehicles, with French, German, British and American tanks from different wars).
Or how about visiting the distinctive troglodyte homes (cave dwellings)? Along the wine route you can stop at one of the many Anjou–Saumur wine cellars to taste the region’s special wines. And of course there are the châteaux of the Loire and other manor houses, parks, gardens and beautiful buildings, such as Fontevraud Abbey, described here as the best-preserved monastic complex in the world.
